Dr. Oludare Owolabi
Dr. Oludare Owolabi is the Director of the Center for Sustainable Infrastructure Development, Smart Innovations and Resilient Engineering Research Lab, department of Civil Engineering at Morgan State University. He obtained his Doctor of Science in Civil and Environmental Engineering with a major in Geotechnical and Transportation Engineering and minor in structural mechanics from the George Washington University. He also has a Masters in Transportation Engineering. He has more than 30 years of outstanding experience in practicing, teaching, and research in civil and transportation engineering. He is an expert in sustainable infrastructure development, material modeling and computational mechanics. His major areas of research interest are transportation pavement engineering, physical and numerical modeling of structures, computational geo-mechanics, geo-structural systems analysis, and new material development.
Dr. Owolabi was PI on a Maryland Department of Transportation State Highway Administration (MDOT SHA) project titled “Highway Geometrics and Noise Abatement Decision” as well as Co-PIs for other two SHA projects: “Validation of Source Approval of Hot Mix Asphalt (HMA) Surface Mix Aggregate Using Spectrometer” and “Highway Runoff Stormwater Management Potential Site Characterization Using NASA Public Domain Imagery. He was the Co-Chair of the Noise Barriers Session of the Transportation Noise of the Institute of Noise Control Engineering International conference 1-5 August 2021. He is also a Member of the Standing Committee on Geo-Environmental and Climatic Impacts on Geomaterials (AKG300) as well as the Standing Committee on Airfield and Airspace Performance (AV060) of the Transportation Research Board.
Dr. Owolabi is also the recipient of the 2020 Morgan State University Outstanding Faculty Award for Excellence in Service. He has secured, as PI or Co-PI, about $2.46 million in research grants that solved society problems in transportation engineering, fostered sustainable infrastructure development and enhanced student engagement in the STEM fields. Dr. Owolabi currently is the Principal Investigator of a three-year $1.5 Million NSF grant that cuts across multiple STEM disciplines at Morgan titled "Adapting an Experiment-centric Teaching Approach to Increase Student Achievement in Multiple STEM Disciplines". Dr. Owolabi has authored over 40 publications/presentations in civil engineering and STEM education. He is a professional engineer registered in Maryland.
