WYSE students in a labIDEA Institute awarded NSF grant to promote systemic change in engineering education

The University of Illinois Urbana-Champaign Institute for Inclusion, Diversity, Equity and Access (IDEA) has been awarded an NSF grant to create the Developing Equity-Minded Engineering Practitioners (DEEP) center in collaboration with Morgan State University (MSU), a historically Black college/university (HBCU) in Baltimore, Maryland. This is the first external grant awarded to the IDEA institute since it was launched in 2019.

ASEE NEE Best DEI Paper Awarded to U of I Team

June 23, 2022

The SIIP/GIANT team led by CS Teaching Assistant Professor, Hongye Liu, was awarded best DEI paper by ASEE. Their paper, A Digital Book Based Pedagogy to Improve Course Content Accessibility for Students with and without Disabilities in Engineering or other STEM Courses was chosen by the New Engineering Educators Division Awards Committee for the best DEI paper of 2022. 

2022 GIANT Project Announcement

April 12, 2022 

We are excited to announce that eight projects have been selected for the 2022 Grassroots Initiatives to Address Needs Together (GIANT) program. Seven new (phase 1) projects, and one continuing (phase 2) project was funded. We are also excited that five projects are being co-sponsored by the IBM-Illinois Discovery Accelerator Institute (IIDAI) and IDEA Institute.

 Sue Larson (Undergrad Programs), Joan Brown (ECE), Desiree Marmon (CS), Amy McCullough (Grad Programs), and Lara Hebert (Public Engagement) completed an intensive week-long professional development event on the topic of working in cross-cultural environments. The program was offered by the Office of Inclusion & Intercultural Relations
